Barefoot Blooms takes pride in designing arrangements with seasonal, organic flowers that are grown in our gardens as well as flowers and greenery that we have wild-harvested from the natural landscapes surrounding us, striving to provide flowers that represent values of sustainability. We want our clients to feel good about the flowers they buy from us, especially when our flowers are integral to a special occasion. Local, seasonal and organic isn’t just about food, it’s about all we consume, including the flowers that make us smile!
It saddens us to know the devastating negative social and environmental costs associated with large-scale flower production. “Floriculture” is big business – historically riddled with intensive chemical use, unregulated labour issues, and other devastating social and environmental impacts. Slowly, these are being addressed by certification and purchasing groups such as Sierra Eco, Veriflora, Fair Trade, Florverde and Rainforest Alliance, who all help to ensure that flowers grown in a more environmentally and socially responsible manner. But it is more than just growing ‘good’ flowers here at Barefoot Blooms. At the core of what we do is nurture the relationship between humans and plants. Humans have an intimate connection with the plant world, despite how disconnected from nature humans have become. Plants provide humans with food, medicine, shelter…beauty. Plants and flowers have been part of human celebration and ceremony for thousands of years, offering both purpose and meaning to these human experiences. For our wedding clients, having brides, grooms and their loved ones come together to share in the creation of the flowers for their special day resonates with a very deep human experience rooted in our relationship with plants. In this experience amid beautiful flowers and intoxicating scents, memories are created as stories are shared, tears are shed and laughter fills the room. |
